It is easy to get caught up in our own lives, get so busy that we lose our sense of wonder. I use my painting to bring me into the present moment, to feel the awe of sunlight shining through the petal of a flower, or how the atmosphere makes mountains recede into the light blue distance. I paint what I call the hyper-local: almost all of my work was painted of locations or subjects within an hour’s drive of my house. Most of my botanical paintings are of flowers or produce grown in my own garden. It is not distance that separates us from beauty, but the focus of our attention. I hope my work inspires people to spend attention on the beauty right at hand.
